#4 -The Eisner Awards
These are the Academy Awards of comics and are a star-studded affair (well, the stars of comics, anyway).  This year (for the 3rd year in a row) I was able to attend the Eisner Awards in the VIP section thanks to my friend Trevor and his relationship with the good folks at MyComicShop.com (who are Eisner Award sponsors).   Jackie Estrada does a wonderful job organizing the event and the judging committee have recognized some really great comics on the nominee list.  I’ve read well over half the items nominated and all the ones I have read are well worthy of being nominated.  I had read almost everything that won and while the winners were sometime not my personal favorites, I think all were deserving the praise.

I’ve attended the ceremony a number of times before from the normal seats that start behind the VIP section at the very front of the room, and it’s well worth attending if you ever get the chance.  If you’re like me you will like the acceptance speeches a lot more than the ones at the Academy Awards.   Seeing the emotion from Vivek Tiwary as he accepted his award was moving.  And that was only one of dozens of heartfelt moments at the ceremony.

The Eisner Awards are a “must see” for serious fans of comics attending SDCC.
